This medium-sized nut variety appears to be very resistant to Chestnut blight and is very promising for hybrid chestnuts in southern Quebec.

Chestnuts prefer acidic soils and should never be limed, unless a severe calcium deficiency is suspected. Alkaline soils should probably be acidified to ensure better plant establishment. Of all nut species, chestnuts show the most potential as annual nut producers in extreme southern Canada. Their late flowering allows them to escape spring frosts, and early maturation enables annual harvests. The nuts are contained in burrs, squirrel and Blue Jay-proof, until they ripen and fall to the ground. All varieties have sweet nuts superior to the European chestnuts often available in grocery stores during the holidays. Trees typically reach 35'-40' or (10 to 12 m) tall and should be spaced 20 to 40' or (6 to 12 m) apart. Production begins in 8-10 years for seedlings. Plant at least 2 different varieties for pollination. All our varieties appear to be resistant to chestnut blight fungus, with the exception of pure American chestnut.

https://fleurexcel.com/en/products/chataignier-hybride-semis-douglas-castanea-dentata-x-mollissima-zone-5b
