It's important to understand that your sample must accurately represent the composition of the soil you want to analyze. Is it for a garden, the front or back of your residence (or both), a flower bed, trees, a hedge, etc.? Soil needs can differ depending on its use. A garden with intensive cultivation will need more fertilizer than a flower bed with small flowers and slow growth. It's up to you to assess if more than one sample is required.
The surface area of your land is very important. We will suggest the necessary amendments based on the size of the soil corresponding to the analyzed sample. This will save you from having to calculate the quantities of nutrients to incorporate into your soil. Surface measurements can be expressed in feet or meters, as you prefer. You will also have the choice of using natural or conventional products (or both).

Where to take it?
For each type of soil, samples must be taken all over the target area to create an average of the soil's composition. Here is a table indicating the sampling method according to the type of use.

We suggest you wear gloves when taking samples to avoid skewing the results.
- Dig with a transplanter or a small shovel (about 4-6 inches deep) and retrieve the soil from the bottom.
- Put the soil in a clean bucket.
- Repeat the previous steps for each sample required according to the surface area of the land to be analyzed (see table).
- Once all the soil patches are mixed in the bucket (for the same type of soil use), take your sample and place it in a Ziploc-type bag (sandwich size minimum). This is the sample that will be brought to the nursery.
Samples can be taken throughout the active growing season. Ideally, 2 weeks after the snow melts in spring until the first snows of autumn.
TO AVOID
You must avoid anything that could skew your results.
- Do not take a sample immediately after applying fertilizer, manure, or lime; you must wait at least 2-3 weeks in this case.
- Use clean tools (Especially avoid rust)
- Do not take a sample before the snow melts; wait 2 weeks from the last trace of snow before taking a sample.
- It should be noted that a single sample for your entire land could distort the interpretation of the results (gardens vs. lawn, for example) because the soil composition is not identical everywhere.
If you've always had excellent results, an analysis can confirm that everything is fine and correct a few minor elements as needed.
If you are considering a new layout, it would be wise to do an analysis, because it is easier to make certain corrections before or during the work than once everything is completed.
If you encounter recurring problems, an analysis will help you, and a follow-up the following year is recommended.
