The American basswood is one of Quebec's largest and most beautiful deciduous trees. It can reach up to 40 m in height and live up to 200 years. When young, its habit is pyramidal and regular, while when older, its branches are more spreading. It is a fast-growing tree. Its pale grayish-brown bark becomes rough with age.
The leaves are simple, asymmetrical, coarsely toothed, and have a pointed heart shape at the tip. The upper surface is dark green and the underside is light green. They are arranged alternately along the twig and are particularly large on young specimens. In July, its yellowish-white flowers are remarkably fragrant and attract bees, earning it the name "honey tree". Its dried flowers can be used to make delicious herbal teas. The globose, dry fruit is covered in brownish pubescence. It is held in a cluster on a bract that only falls off in winter.
