Lithops (Stone Plant)
Lithops, also known as "living stones" due to their appearance, are unique and fascinating succulents. They require specific care to thrive. Here's how to care for them:
-
Light: Lithops require bright, indirect light. Place them near a south or east-facing window where they receive gentle sunlight for a few hours a day. Avoid direct, scorching sun exposure.
-
Temperature: Keep your Lithops at a stable room temperature of around 21°C during the day and do not expose them to temperatures below 10°C. They are sensitive to cold.
-
Watering: Lithops are succulents adapted to arid conditions. Water them very sparingly. Allow the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. Generally, watering every 3 to 4 weeks may suffice, or even less frequently in winter.
-
Potting Mix: Use a potting mix specifically designed for succulents or cacti, which provides excellent drainage. You can even mix in sand or perlite to improve drainage.
-
Humidity: Lithops do not need high humidity. They thrive in a dry environment.
-
Fertilization: Lithops do not need much fertilizer. If you choose to fertilize, use a balanced fertilizer diluted to half strength about once a year, in spring.
-
Repotting: Lithops have a shallow root system, and repotting is usually only necessary when they have outgrown their pot. This may occur every 2 to 3 years.
-
Propagation: Lithops generally propagate from seeds, as they produce new growths from the central fissure. You can also carefully divide them when repotting.
-
Rain Protection: Avoid leaving your Lithops in the rain or in an excessively humid environment, as this can cause rot.
