Reiger/Solenia/Tuberous Begonia
The Reiger Begonia, also known as the indoor begonia, is a variety of begonia that is prized for its vibrant and colorful flowers. Here's how to care for this plant inside your home:
1. Light: Reiger Begonias prefer bright, indirect light. Place the plant near a window where it will receive filtered light. Avoid direct sun exposure, as this can burn the leaves and flowers.
2. Temperature: Maintain room temperature between 18°C and 24°C (65°F and 75°F). Avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F), as they can damage the plant.
3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering. Water when the top of the soil begins to dry slightly. Be sure not to let the plant sit in stagnant water, as this can lead to root rot.
4. Humidity: Reiger Begonias appreciate higher ambient humidity. You can increase the humidity around the plant by using a humidifier or by placing a tray of water with pebbles near the plant.
5. Fertilization: Fertilize the plant with a diluted balanced indoor plant fertilizer approximately every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilization in autumn and winter when growth slows down.
6. Pruning: Remove faded flowers and dead leaves to encourage the growth of new blooms.
7. Repotting: Repotting is generally only necessary when the plant becomes root-bound in its pot, which may occur every 2 to 3 years. Use a slightly larger pot and a quality potting mix.
