Assorted coleus
Coleus, also known as Solenostemon scutellarioides, is a popular houseplant cherished for its colorful and varied leaves. Here's how to care for this plant indoors:
1. Light: Coleus prefer bright, indirect light. Place the plant near a window where it will receive filtered light. Coleus varieties with colorful leaves tend to develop more vibrant colors with more intense light, but avoid direct sun exposure, as this can burn the leaves.
2. Temperature: Maintain room temperature between 18°C and 24°C (65°F and 75°F). Coleus are sensitive to cold temperatures, so avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
3. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering. Water when the topsoil begins to dry out slightly. Ensure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot. Generally, regular and moderate watering is sufficient.
4. Humidity: Coleus tolerate normal humidity levels in most homes. However, they can benefit from a slightly more humid atmosphere. You can increase humidity by placing a pebble tray with water near the plant or using a humidifier.
5. Fertilization: Fertilize the plant with a diluted balanced indoor plant fertilizer approximately every 4 to 6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce fertilizer in fall and winter when growth slows down.
6. Pruning: Prune the plant as needed to maintain its shape and encourage dense growth. You can also pinch back the tips of the stems to promote branching and bushier growth.
7. Repotting: Repotting is generally only necessary when the plant outgrows its pot, which may occur approximately every 2 to 3 years. Use a pot slightly larger than the previous one and a quality potting mix.
