Dendrobium nobile, sometimes called "bamboo orchid," is a popular orchid known for its clusters of colorful flowers. Here's how to care for this plant:
1. Light: Dendrobium nobile prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. A location with light filtered by a sheer curtain is ideal. You can also place them behind a light fabric curtain to provide diffused light.
2. Temperature: These orchids need temperature variations to stimulate flowering. During the growing season (spring and summer), they prefer daytime temperatures of approximately 21-27°C (70-80°F) and slightly cooler nighttime temperatures (around 15-18°C / 59-65°F). In winter, they tolerate cooler temperatures, but avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
3. Watering: Water your Dendrobium nobile to keep the substrate slightly moist, but not waterlogged. Water more generously during the growing season, then reduce watering in winter when the plant's growth slows down. Make sure not to let water stagnate in the pot.
4. Humidity: Dendrobium nobile prefers relatively high humidity. You can increase the humidity around the plant by placing a tray of water with pebbles under the pot or by using a humidifier.
5. Fertilization: Fertilize with a balanced fertilizer specially formulated for orchids. Apply fertilizer every two weeks or so during the growing season, and reduce the frequency in winter.
6. Pruning: After flowering, you can prune faded flower stalks to encourage new growth. This can encourage the plant to rebloom.
7. Repotting: Dendrobium nobile does not need frequent repotting. Repot them only when the roots become excessively tangled or when the substrate has broken down, usually every 2 to 3 years.
8. Support: Use an appropriate support to keep the stems upright, as they tend to become long and slender.
9. Winter Rest: In winter, reduce watering and fertilization to allow the plant to rest. This will stimulate future flowering.
