Cape Sundew
Drosera capensis, also known as the Cape sundew, is a carnivorous plant that is relatively easy to care for if you understand its specific needs. Here's how to care for this plant:
1. Light: Drosera capensis needs a lot of direct light. Place the plant in a location where it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. A sunny window is ideal. If you are growing the plant indoors, artificial light suitable for carnivorous plants can also be used.
2. Water: Use demineralized water, rainwater, or distilled water to water the plant. Avoid tap water, as it can contain minerals that will damage the plant's sensitive leaves. Keep the plant's tray always filled with water to maintain adequate humidity levels.
3. Humidity: Drosera capensis needs a humid atmosphere. If your environment is dry, you can increase the humidity around the plant by placing the pot on a tray with water or by using a humidifier.
4. Soil: Use a well-aerated, acidic soil mix, such as peat with sand or perlite. Make sure the soil is constantly moist.
5. Feeding: The plant is capable of catching insects for its own nutritional intake. Do not artificially feed the plant unless it is unable to catch enough insects on its own.
6. Temperature: Drosera capensis prefers temperatures between 18°C and 24°C during the day and should not drop below 10°C at night.
7. Pruning: If the plant produces long, leafless stems or if the leaves appear wilted, you can cut them back to encourage the growth of new, healthy leaves.
