Birds of Paradise, or Strelitzia, are tropical plants prized for their elegant leaves and colorful, exotic flowers. Here's how to care for your Birds of Paradise:
-
Light:
- Birds of Paradise prefer bright light, even direct sunlight. Place them near a sunny window, but avoid direct exposure to scorching sun, especially in summer. Bright indirect light is also acceptable.
-
Temperature:
- Keep Birds of Paradise at temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (65°F and 75°F). They do not tolerate temperatures below 10°C (50°F) well. Protect them from cold in winter.
-
Watering:
- Water regularly, but allow the soil to dry out slightly between waterings. Make sure the pot has good drainage to prevent root rot.
- Avoid leaving Birds of Paradise in standing water in the saucer, as they don't like constantly wet roots.
-
Humidity:
- Birds of Paradise like relatively high humidity. If the air is dry, use a humidifier or place a tray of water near the plant to increase the humidity around it.
-
Fertilization:
- Fertilize Birds of Paradise approximately once a month in spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer or a fertilizer specially formulated for houseplants. Reduce fertilization in autumn and winter.
-
Pruning:
- Regularly remove yellowed or faded leaves. If your plant becomes too large, you can prune it to maintain its shape.
-
Cleaning:
- Regularly dust the leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow the plant to better absorb light.
-
Potting:
- Repot your plant every 2-3 years in spring if it becomes too large for its pot. Use quality potting mix and a slightly larger pot.
