Northern Pecan, Carya Illinoinensis (Northern Pecan) 4b-5a
Zone 4b
The Northern Pecan originates from sources in southern Wisconsin and northern Iowa, states in the American Midwest where the climate is similar to that of Ontario and southern Quebec, with long, cold winters. This is the northernmost extension of the American pecan's distribution range, which produces the famous pecans found in stores. The trees we produce come from the coldest sources. Its nut is about 2 times smaller than the standard pecan but even sweeter, and its shell is thinner. Ideal in the greater Montreal area, it is adaptable to warm zone 4b in southern Lanaudière, southern Outaouais, southern Laurentians, southern Mauricie, and Montérégie. In our nut orchard, it has proven its hardiness in 4b because it tends to harden off quickly, and the buds can withstand severe cold. You can consult its technical sheet for more details on its potential hardiness and cultivation.
