Clapp's Favorite Pear (Pyrus Clapp's Favorite)
Vigorous, late-flowering pear tree producing large, yellow-green fruit with an orange to light red blush on the sun-exposed side. Its flesh is juicy, melting, with a subtle fragrance. Harvest in early August when green for slow indoor ripening, to be consumed quickly. Never wait for the fruit to ripen on the tree as it will quickly become mealy and pasty.
Sun exposure. Ordinary soil, not too sandy, not too dry to moist. Sensitive to temperatures below -25°C and cold, dry winter winds. Deciduous foliage. Spreading habit.
It will start producing fruit 2 to 4 years after planting. Pruning is done in March, at the end of winter. In autumn, install a spiral guard on the trunk to protect it against sunscald and rodents, for the first few years.
Pollination: Self-sterile. Requires another pear tree for pollination.
