Portulacaria afra
Portulacaria afra, also known as "Elephant Bush" or "Dwarf Jade," is a popular succulent plant, cherished for its easy care. Here's how to care for it:
1. Light: Place your Portulacaria afra in a bright location. It prefers bright to direct light, but can tolerate indirect light. The more light it receives, the denser and more compact its growth will be.
2. Watering: Portulacarias are succulents and prefer well-draining soil and moderate watering. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water when the topsoil is dry to the touch, but ensure the water drains well from the pot. Reduce watering in winter when the plant is dormant.
3. Temperature: Portulacaria afra prefers mild temperatures between 18°C and 24°C (64°F and 75°F). It tolerates slightly cooler temperatures in winter, but avoid temperatures below 7°C (45°F).
4. Humidity: Portulacarias tolerate normal relative humidity. They do not require high humidity.
5. Fertilization: Fertilize the plant with a diluted balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), approximately every 4 to 6 weeks. Avoid fertilization in winter.
6. Repotting: Portulacarias do not need frequent repotting. Only repot if the plant becomes too root-bound in its pot, usually every 2 to 3 years.
7. Pruning: You can prune your Portulacaria afra to maintain its shape and appearance. Cuttings can be rooted to create new plants.
8. Common Problems: Watch out for pests such as mealybugs, aphids, and spider mites. Treat them promptly if you spot them. Portulacarias are generally resistant to pests and diseases.
