The pretty Sensation cosmos flowers bloom in various shades of pink and white. A row of serrated petals (ray florets) radiates around the yellow center composed of fertile disc florets. These cheerful, easy-to-grow flowers require little: ordinary, rather poor soil and a bit of water during extreme heatwaves. Be careful, very rich soils delay flowering by stimulating foliage growth. For better branching, pinch the tips of the stems when the plant is 15 cm tall. The flowers bloom all summer long and attract many beneficial insects like pollinators, as well as certain predators. For example, the green lacewing is fond of its white flowers. The larvae of this insect are very useful in biological control programs because they feed on aphids, mealybugs, and thrips.
