Scindapsus pictus Silver Splash
The Scindapsus pictus 'Silver Splash' is a popular variety of Scindapsus, also known as "silver pothos." It is characterized by its dark green leaves adorned with silver or gray spots. Here's how to care for this houseplant:
1. Light: Place your Scindapsus pictus 'Silver Splash' in a bright location, but avoid direct sunlight, as this can burn the leaves. Bright indirect light is ideal for this plant. It can also tolerate low light conditions, but its growth may be less vigorous and the silver pattern on the leaves may fade.
2. Temperature: Maintain the plant within a temperature range of 18°C to 24°C (65°F to 75°F) during the day. It tolerates slightly cooler temperatures at night, but avoid temperatures below 10°C (50°F).
3. Watering: Allow the topsoil to dry out between waterings. Water regularly, but avoid waterlogging the soil. Too much water can lead to root rot. When watering, ensure that water drains freely from the pot.
4. Humidity: Scindapsus plants appreciate relatively high humidity levels. You can increase ambient humidity by placing the plant on a pebble tray with water, or by using a humidifier.
5. Fertilization: Use a balanced, diluted houseplant fertilizer in spring and summer, approximately every 4 to 6 weeks. Reduce or stop fertilizing in autumn and winter, when growth is slower.
6. Pruning: Prune the plant as needed to maintain its shape and encourage denser growth. You can also remove yellowed or damaged leaves as they appear.
7. Repotting: Repotting is generally only necessary when the plant becomes root-bound in its pot. Do this approximately every 2 to 3 years. Use a pot slightly larger than the previous one.
8. Toxicity: Scindapsus plants can be toxic to pets if ingested. Be sure to keep them out of reach.
