JMC 2014 Experts' Choice (native plants category). Verbena hastata grows in open areas with cool to moist soils. This hardy native plant (zone 3) is suitable for revegetating banks and in rain gardens (collecting rainwater). Leafy stems grow 1.00 to 1.75 m tall, with numerous small spikes of purple flowers developing at the top. Flowering begins in July and continues until early September. The flowers attract butterflies. This plant is ignored by deer. A sunny or lightly shaded location and ordinary to rich, loose, and consistently cool soil promote the growth of this native vervain.
